QR Codes on Flyers: Size, Placement and Design Tips
How to put a QR code on a flyer that people actually scan: the right size, placement, call to action and tracking, plus mistakes that kill scan rates.

A QR code on a flyer turns a piece of paper into a booking, a sale or a sign-up. But most flyer codes get almost no scans because they're too small, hidden, or give no reason to scan.
Pick the right destination
Send people to one clear action: a booking page, an offer, a menu or a sign-up form. A mobile-friendly mini page works better than a desktop homepage.
Size and placement
- Print the code at least 2.5 cm (1 in) wide on an A5 or A4 flyer.
- Leave a quiet white border around it — at least the width of four small squares.
- Place it bottom-right or next to the offer, never on a fold.
- Avoid glossy patches that reflect light over the code.
Give a reason to scan
Write the benefit next to the code: 'Scan for 10% off', 'Scan to book a free quote', 'Scan for tonight's menu'. Frames with a caption, like Linkly's 'Scan me' styles, lift scan rates.
Track every print run
Use a dynamic QR for each flyer batch or area. Then you can see which streets, shops or events drove scans and stop paying for print that doesn't work.
Mistakes to avoid
- Light code on a light background.
- Shrinking the code to make room for text.
- Linking to a PDF that's hard to read on phones.
- Using a generator that switches codes off after a trial.
Frequently asked questions
What size should a QR code be on a flyer?
At least 2.5 cm (1 in) wide. Bigger if people will scan from a distance, like on a noticeboard.
Can I change where the code goes after printing?
Yes, if you use a dynamic QR. You change the link in your dashboard; the printed code stays the same.
Black and white or colour?
Both work as long as the code is dark on a light background with strong contrast.
How do I know if my flyers worked?
Use a dynamic QR and check the scan count by day. Compare different designs or areas.
